Having fun with platformers

My project was to create a platformer game that I was to add features to over a few weeks, and record and document the changes.

First, I needed to have a base game for me to work with. I had the choice of either a fresh game made by following a tutorial, or any games I had made previously. I chose a game I had made for my Fundamentals of Game Technology class, as my final project.

With my base game chosen, I set out creating a feature list, formatting it (mostly) according to the brief. With that done, I submitted the list, along with a playable .swf file, and called it a day.

The following day I recieved feedback on the game and feature list, and took it into account. I then recieved my next set of instructions, which was to record a tester of our choosing, and document their feedback.

Due to the fact that I had no new features planned for the game (as I only added existing features), and so set out brainstorming whatever I could add to the game. After coming up with and listing down the ideas, I then started implementing some of them, and began fixing some of the bugs that were in the game.

I gave the game to the tester, recording the session, and noted down feedback and proposed changes that I recieved.

Over the coming weeks, I'll write blogs posts about the changes I've implemented into the game each week, as well as any other notes I have.

The base game (or first iteration) had the following features:-

  • A tutorial

  • Jumping

  • Left-right movement

  • Shooting

  • Player flashing on taking damage

  • Health

That's all for the first iteration, the next post will contain the changes I made to the game in the second version, and some planned improvements/ additions for the third and beyond.

Thanks for reading!
